4,4'-Bipyridine is used in transition-metal complex catalyst chemistry for uniform polymerization, in luminescence chemistry and in spectrophotometric analysis. It plays an important role as a photosensitizer and luminescent material. It is also used as a precursor to paraquat viz. N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium.

Applications
La 4,4′-bipyridine est utilisée dans la chimie du catalyseur complexe de métaux de transition pour une polymérisation uniforme, dans la chimie de luminescence et dans l’analyse spectrophotométrique. Elle joue un rôle important en tant que matériau photosensible et luminescent. Elle est également utilisée comme précurseur du paraquat viz. N,N′-diméthyl-4,4′-bipyridinium.

Solubilité
Soluble dans l’éthanol, l’éther. Insoluble dans l’eau.
