It is employed as an electrophoresis tracking dye and also finds its uses as an industrial dye, a laboratory acid-base indicator and a biological stain to detect proteins and nucleic acids (absorbance at 610 nm), particularly when staining living tissues. In gel electrophoresis it can be used as a color marker and as a biological stain it can be used to stain proteins and nucleic acids. Bromophenol blue is an intermediate and is used as an acid-based indicator in the pH range of 3-4.6 where the color changes from yellow to blue.

Applications
Utilisé comme colorant de suivi d’électrophorèse, il sert également de colorant industriel, d’indicateur acide-base de laboratoire et de colorant biologique dans la détection des protéines et des acides nucléiques (absorbance à 610 nm), en particulier lors de la coloration des tissus vivants. Dans l’électrophorèse sur gel, il peut être utilisé comme marqueur de couleur et comme coloration biologique, dans ce cas pour colorer les protéines et les acides nucléiques. Le bleu de bromophénol est un intermédiaire utilisé comme indicateur à base d’acide dans la plage de pH de 3 à 4,6 où la couleur passe du jaune au bleu.

Solubilité
Librement soluble dans le NaOH. Plus soluble dans les alcools méthyliques et éthyliques, le benzène et l’acide acétique. Légèrement soluble dans l’eau (0,4 g/100 g) à 20°C. Soluble dans le méthanol (10 mg/ml).
