Bromothymol Blue is a pH indicator used for measuring pH around 7 in pools and fish tanks. It operates in the pH range 6.0 to 7.6 due to the presence of an electron withdrawing and donating groups like bromine atoms and alkyl substitutents respectively. In the laboratory, it is used as a biological slide stain as well as used in obstetrics for detecting premature rupture of membranes. Further, it is used for the observation of photosynthetic activities and a respiratory indicator. In addition to this, it is used to define cell walls or nuclei under the microscope.

Applications
Le bleu de bromothymol est un indicateur de pH utilisé pour mesurer le pH d’environ 7 dans les piscines et les réservoirs de poissons. Il fonctionne dans la plage de pH compris entre 6,0 et 7,6 en raison de la présence d’un groupe de retrait et de don d’électrons que sont les atomes de brome et les substituants d’alkyle respectivement. En laboratoire, il sert de coloration biologique des lames ainsi qu’en obstétrique pour la détection de la rupture prématurée des membranes. Utile à l’observation d’activités photosynthétiques, il constitue aussi un indicateur respiratoire. Qui plus est, il est utilisé pour définir les parois des cellules ou les noyaux au microscope.

Solubilité
Soluble dans l’éthanol, l’éther et les alcalis. Légèrement soluble dans l’eau.
