Mercaptoacetic acid sodium salt is used as a reagent that protects tryptophan in amino acid analysis. It is a commonly used reagent for bacteriological research to maintain reducing conditions in media. It also protect enzymes against inactivation by maintaining protein thiol groups in the reduced state.

Applications
Le sel de sodium de l’acide mercaptoacétique est utilisé comme réactif qui protège le tryptophane dans l’analyse des acides aminés. Il s’agit d’un réactif couramment utilisé pour la recherche bactériologique afin de maintenir des conditions de réduction dans les milieux. Il protège également les enzymes contre l’inactivation en maintenant les groupes de thiols protéiques à l’état réduit.
