Protection of amines as their tetrachlorophthalimide derivatives, by reaction with the anhydride in the presence of triethylamine, has been found to be useful in oligosaccharide chemistry. The group is stable to a wide range of reagents but can be selectively cleaved with ethylenediamine at lower temperatures than for the parent phthalimide derivatives; in particular, carboxylic esters are not cleaved under these conditions.

Applications
La protection des amines en tant que dérivés du tétrachlorophtalimide, par réaction avec l’anhydride en présence de triéthylamine, s’est avérée utile dans la chimie des oligosaccharides. Le groupe est stable à une large gamme de réactifs, mais peut être clivé de façon sélective avec l’éthylènediamine à des températures plus basses que pour les dérivés du phtalimide parent ; en particulier, les esters carboxyliques ne sont pas clivés dans ces conditions.
