Cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate is used in the preparation of allylsilanes from esters. It is used as a reducing agent in organic synthesis in place of sodium borohydride. In Luche reaction, carvone gives selectively allylic alcohol.

Applications
Le chlorure de cérium(III) heptahydraté est utilisé dans la préparation d’allylsilanes à partir d’esters. Il est utilisé comme agent réducteur dans la synthèse organique à la place du borohydrure de sodium. Dans la réaction de Luche, le carbone favorise la formation sélective d’alcool allylique.

Solubilité
Soluble dans l’alcool et l’acétone. Légèrement soluble dans le tétrahydrofurane. Insoluble dans l’eau froide.

Remarques
Sensible à l’air. Hygroscopique. Incompatible avec les acides forts et les agents oxydants forts.
