Le TFA est utilisé comme agent d’appariement d’ions dans la chromatographie en phase liquide, comme solvant dans la spectroscopie RMN et comme étalon dans la spectrométrie de masse.

Miscible avec éther, acétone, éthanol, benzène, hexane et tétrachlorure de carbone.
