The LRRC23 (Leucine-Rich Repeat Containing 23) gene encodes a protein that is an evolutionarily conserved component of the radial spoke complex in sperm flagella. It is located on human chromosome 12. The LRRC23 protein interacts with radial spoke head proteins such as RSPH3A and RSPH3B, crucial for the structural integrity and proper function of the radial spokes, which are essential for flagellar motility. Mutations or deficiencies in LRRC23 have been linked to male infertility, specifically causing asthenozoospermia, characterized by reduced sperm motility. Studies have identified various mutations in LRRC23 that result in disorganized radial spokes and impaired sperm motility, leading to infertility.
