Description
DDX4 belongs to the DEAD box helicase family or DDX4/VASA subfamily. DEAD box proteins are characterized by the conserved Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) motif and are putative RNA helicases. This protein has a glycine-rich N terminus with multiple repeats of an RGG motif, which is believed to function in RNA binding. They have a role in a number of cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. The members of this family are involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. This gene encodes a DEAD box protein, which is a homolog of VASA proteins in Drosophila. It is specifically expressed in the germ cell lineage in both sexes and functions in germ cell development. It is required during gametogenesis in the adult and in the specification of the germ cell lineage during embryogenesis. This is conserved in invertebrate and vertebrate species.Spécification
