The ITGA5 and ITGB1 genes encode the alpha-5 and beta-1 subunits of integrin receptors, respectively. These integrins are transmembrane receptors that mediate cell adhesion and signaling between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cell interior. ITGA5, located on chromosome 12q13, binds with ITGB1, located on chromosome 10p11, to form the alpha 5 beta 1 integrin heterodimer, which specifically interacts with fibronectin, facilitating cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and survival.
